![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The list of reasons supporting their fame is as long as the bine grows tall. Imagine the delight of brewers when their beer didn’t spoil as quickly pre-refrigeration with the simple addition of hops. To top it all off, the use of hops in beer came about when it was discovered they not only added bitterness when boiled, but also antimicrobial properties. Fields of malt or large bodies of water can be pretty to look at, and yeast, well, good luck identifying that with the naked eye. I can’t say I’ve seen myself quite as in awe of the other three beer ingredients if spotted while walking as I am with hops. With a scientific name like Humulus lupulus, in addition to their unique looks, it’s easy to understand why hops receive immensely more limelight than malt, yeast, or water. ![]() Tiny, downward facing spines help them grip the object they’re climbing, and give reason for harvesters to wear gloves, lest they receive a hop scratch. While vines send out small tendrils and suckers to attach and support themselves, bines simply grow in a helical shape by twisting in circles around a hefty string, signpost, or telephone pole. Though similar in looks, the main difference is the way each plant supports its weight as it climbs and tangles itself on objects that get them closer to the sun. Yes, they grow on a bine as opposed to a vine. Hops are as sexy on the bine as they are in your pale ale. Here in Salt Lake City, UT, they grow wild just as well as domestically, and can be spotted on hiking trails, backyard gardens, and even neighborhood alleys. Between these parallels lies a belt of ideal climates in which hops thrive. I am lucky to live between the 35th and 50th parallels on this fine earth, along with most of the northern United States and some southern parts of Canada. Do they often get eyed up for future batches of beer, or am I their sole admirer? The joy I get from checking on them every so often on my evening dog walks is well worth their existence, in my opinion, regardless if they’re destined for the kettle or to dry and crumble by late Autumn. I wonder if they were thoughtfully planted, or as wild and forgotten as the knee-high weeds beneath them. Seeing a towering bine wrapped around a telephone pole or tall fence with little green pinecone-looking hops dangling in clusters amidst the shade of hand-sized leaves sends a smile to my face and tickles my inner homebrewer. My alltime favorite plant to find is hops. I keep a mental list of gardening and landscape ideas as I peruse the alleyway like an aisle at IKEA. The occasional dog reminds me my presence is unwelcome, though the same greeting would be received from the front yard on the sidewalk. Willow trees, chicken coops, and sunflowers line the rickety fences protecting unkept backyards. They’re a pretend escape from the city grid, at least for a block or two. My favorite places to walk are the neighborhood alleys – many of which are seldom used and ripe with interesting un-city-like views. My dog trots along sniffing bushes and tree trunks while I note fruit trees and herbs. I often find myself on these walks admiring the gardens, plants and trees growing in neighbor’s yards and down back alleys. And so I walk these balmy evenings, remembering that my fingers not reaching rigor mortis status is a generous gift of the summer months. The dark winter walks at 6pm with frozen fingers have me cursing puffs of precious hot air from my mouth, ever-longing for the sweaty walks of July and August. It sure beats the hell out of a frigid walk in January despite four thick layers and a brisk pace. In these warm summer evenings, as the sun peeks through the clouds and city haze before melting into the horizon, I relish the thought of walking my dog through the neighborhood at a borderline uncomfortably warm temperature even in short shorts and a tank top. ![]() ![]() While we considered ourselves tamer than fraternities at many state schools (where Greek affiliation can often take precedence over just about everything), my brothers and I still saw drunken debauchery in the chapter house as our fraternal mandate. I was a Phi Delt at Northwestern in the mid-90's - not that long ago, to be sure, but seemingly a different time entirely. As I listened to the brothers in that backyard go on about life at one of Northwestern's "alcohol free" fraternities, I couldn't help feeling a little sorry for them. "We just didn't see a way to dramatically change the fraternity culture without removing alcohol," said Bob Biggs, executive vice president of Phi Delta Theta, when we met last fall in his office at the fraternity's spotless, museumlike international headquarters in Oxford, Ohio.īut what, exactly, would a dry fraternity look like? And would anyone want to join? You'd have a better chance, I thought, of getting James Carville and Bob Novak to open "Crossfire" with five minutes of meditation. Friendships will be forged out of genuine respect, not the shared misery of hazing or the shared fog of drink. (Sororities have long banned drinking in their chapter houses.) Take away the booze, the new alcohol-free theory goes, and fraternities will be safer, on more solid economic footing (fewer lawsuits, cheaper liability insurance) and more conducive to the creation of real bonds of brotherhood. While all kinds of college students binge drink, the 2001 College Alcohol Study by the Harvard School of Public Health found that fraternity house residents are twice as likely to do so as other students.Įleven national and international fraternities, including Phi Delta Theta, now require most of their chapter houses to be alcohol-free, no matter what their university's policy is. University administrators, alarmed by the extent of binge drinking on their campuses, are cracking down on the excesses of Greek life, saying it's high time for fraternity boys to shape up and sober up. "So long, 'Animal House.' " It's doom and gloom time for many fraternity boys at Northwestern and at colleges across the country. "The good old-fashioned fraternity experience is dead," he said, pausing for dramatic effect. ![]() Peter Micali, a square-jawed Phi Delt sophomore who had wandered within earshot, chimed in, "Yeah, it was easier to party in high school."īok shook his head sadly. (Bok looks like a meathead but says he scored a 1,550 out of 1,600 on the SAT.) Both Michels and Bok were marveling at the success of the day's tailgate. I wished him luck ("Keep it real!" he replied) and made my way toward the keg, where I bumped into Theo Michels, Phi Delt's likable chapter president, and Greg Bok, a big, sarcastic, deceptively smart sophomore. "Two-Shot!" I said loudly as he meandered through the crowd in a hooded sweatshirt and jeans, a beer in one hand and a cheap plastic bottle of vodka in the other. Packed into a backyard near the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., were some 100 drunken college students, beer spilling from plastic cups, industrial-size ketchup bottles overturned on the grass near the grill and gaggles of hard-drinking sorority girls (including one self-described Phi Delt groupie) keeping pace with the boys.Īmid the revelry, I spotted a lanky, easygoing Phi Delt sophomore from Texas who goes by the nickname Two-Shot, because two shots is about all it takes to get him acting silly. ![]() I couldn't see them just then, but proof of their existence was everywhere. One rumor that must be taken with a large pinch of salt is that Cavill might be playing Hyperion in Loki season 2. It’s true that actors like Elba, JK Simmons, and Laurence Fishburne have appeared in both the MCU and DCEU, but to snatch up their biggest rival’s golden boy would be a big win for the MCU’s ever-expanding roster. It wouldn’t be surprising if Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige and company were in a mad scramble to get Cavill on board for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Cavill is 39 at the time of publishing, which might’ve finally put him out of the running. Those at the top want a 10-12 year commitment from their next Bond, who they’ve described as a super spy in his 30s. Speaking of age, producer Barbara Broccoli has suggested they’re looking for a younger 007. It would be a case of history repeating itself because Cavill has previously confirmed it came down to him and Craig for Casino Royale, which would’ve made him the youngest actor ever to play Bond. Speaking to USA Today, Cavill said, “it’s all about how much time I have, and these roles need to be respected and a lot of work needs to be put into them.” He rightly said, “You can’t just be jumping from iconic role to iconic role with no time to prep for them,” but with no Superman to train for, the odds of him becoming Bond have just been slashed by bookmakers. In an ideal world, I’d never have to turn anything down.” More recently, he downplayed the idea because he was too busy with Superman. In late 2021, Cavill told The Hollywood Reporter “nothing is off the table,” explaining, “I think it would be very exciting to have a conversation with the producers. I don’t think there’s a place for me in there, though.” Unless he’s being coy, it doesn’t sound like conversations have taken place. But responding to the House of the Dragon rumors, Cavill told the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, “I think it would be cool to be in Westeros, I really do. Conveniently, others have tipped him as the perfect Aegon the Conqueror to give House of the Dragon its own prequel.īeyond fan casting, there was an actual rumor going around in 2022 suggesting Cavill could be setting sail for the Seven Kingdoms for House of the Dragon season 2, although who Cavill might play remained a mystery at the time. Mark Addy famously played “the Drunk King” during his twilight on Game of Thrones, but with multiple spin-offs in the works, Cavill could definitely play Robert in his glory days. Beyond Cregan, fans have also tapped Cavill to play a young Robert Baratheon in a version of Robert’s Rebellion. House of the Dragon RumorĬould Cavill hold the fort at Winterfell as Cregan Stark in House of the Dragon? That’s just one of the many Game of Thrones universe fan casts and rumors circling the actor. It’s not just the general public backing Cavill Warhammer. And if it’s not, I’ll be massively disappointed.” Games Workshop has been particularly protective of the IP when it comes to live-action adaptations, but considering Dungeons & Dragons is getting a big screen revival via the Chris Pine-led Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, it’s about time Warhammer was introduced to the mainstream. In the Empire interview, Cavill said, “It needs to be handled to a Lord of the Rings level. Whatever route the Warhammer 40,000 series takes, it’ll take some serious budget. One step closer to making a nigh on lifelong dream come true.” I couldn’t be more grateful for all the hard work put in by Vertigo, Amazon Studios, and Games Workshop to make this happen. “The opportunity to shepherd this cinematic universe from its inception is quite the honor and the responsibility. “I have loved Warhammer since I was a boy, making this moment truly special for me,” said Cavill in a statement following the acquisition. ![]() In the past, the actor has defended his love of painting his Warhammer figures and even described a live-action Warhammer 40,000 as his dream project to Empire back in 2021. Like the GTX 980, NVIDIA’s target market for the GTX 970 will be owners of GTX 600/500/400 series cards and their AMD equivalents. NVIDIA’s official designs still include 2 6-pin PCIe power sockets despite the fact that the card should technically be able to operate on just one it is not clear at this time whether this is for overclocking purposes (150W would leave almost no power headroom) or for safety purposes since NVIDIA would be so close to going over PCIe specifications. The stock GTX 970 will be shipping with a TDP of just 145W, some 80W less than GTX 770’s official TDP of 225W. ![]() GTX 970’s TDP meanwhile is lower than GTX 980’s thanks to the reduced clock speeds and SMM count. Compared to the GTX 770 that the GTX 970 replaces, this is a welcome and much needed upgrade from what has been the 2GB VRAM standard that NVIDIA has held to for the last two and a half years. This means we’re looking at 4GB of GDDR5 clocked at 7GHz, all on a 256-bit bus. Given that the GTX 970 is unlikely to be ROP bound with so many ROPs, the real world performance difference should much more closely track the 79% value, meaning there is still potentially a significant performance delta between the GTX 980 and GTX 970.Įlsewhere the memory configuration is unchanged from GTX 980. This puts the theoretical performance difference between it and the GTX 980 at about 85% of the ROP performance or about 79% of the shading/texturing/geometry performance. It ships at a base clock speed of 1050MHz and a boost clock speed of 1178MHz. It also sheds part of a ROP/L2 cache partition while retaining the 256-bit memory bus of its bigger sibling, bringing the ROP count down to 56 ROPs and the L2 cache down to 1.75MB, a configuration option new to MaxwellĪlong with the reduction in SMMs clock speed is also reduced slightly for GTX 970. NVIDIA GPU Specification ComparisonĬompared to GTX 980 and its full-fledged GM204 GPU, GTX 970 takes a harvested GM204 that drops 3 of the SMMs, reducing its final count to 13 SMMs or 1664 CUDA cores. With GTX 980 already topping our charts, if GTX 970 can stay relatively close then it would be a very tantalizing value proposition for enthusiast gamers who want to buy in to GM204 at a lower price. The performance decrease from the reduced clock speeds and fewer SMMs is going to be tangible, but then so is a $220 savings to the pocketbook. ![]() ![]() In fact at $329 it’s some 40% cheaper than GTX 980, one of the largest discounts for a second-tier GeForce card in recent memory.įor this reason GTX 970 is an interesting card on its own, if not more interesting overall than its bigger sibling. Based on the same GM204 but configured with fewer active SMMs, a slightly lower clock speed, and a lower TDP, GTX 970 fills the gap by providing a lower performance but much lower priced alternative to the flagship GTX 980. But as in every GeForce product lineup there is a GeForce x70 right behind it, and for GTX 980 its lower-tier, lower priced counterpart is the GeForce GTX 970. Of course even though GTX 980 was cheaper than the outgoing GTX 780 Ti, it is still a flagship card and at $549 is priced accordingly. Combined with a lower price than the now-dethroned GTX 780 Ti, GTX 980 is an impressive flagship with a mix of attributes that NVIDIA hopes to entice existing 600 and 500 series owners to upgrade to. Based on the company’s new GM204 GPU, GTX 980 further cemented NVIDIA’s ownership of the performance crown with a combination of performance improvements, new features, and power consumption reductions. These include:Īlso, the test can be unreliable for people of African, Mediterranean, or Southeast Asian descent, people with a family member with sickle cell anemia, and those with thalassemia. There are some health conditions and situations that might skew the results of the A1C test. The NIDDK warns that blood samples taken at home or analyzed in a healthcare provider’s office should not be used for diagnosis. Doctors should use laboratories that are certified by the National Glycohemoglobin Standardization Program (NGSP) to test A1C levels. Strict quality controls and advancements in testing have made the A1C test more precise than in the past, according to the NIDDK. However, this occurs more commonly in the FPG and OGTT than in the A1C test. Testing environments, such as temperature in the lab, equipment used, and handling of samples, can affect the results. However, blood sugar levels are sometimes not high enough to appear problematic in the early stages of diabetes. How accurate are A1C tests?Ī1C levels rise well before the clinical onset of diabetes, making early diagnosis possible according to the 2017 Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes by the American Diabetes Association (ADA). If the results are borderline or if the results of the different tests do not match, a doctor might suggest repeating the test in several weeks or months. The random plasma glucose test, which does not require fasting, can also be used. If A1C test results indicate a person has or might have diabetes, a healthcare provider might suggest one of these tests to confirm the results. Unlike the fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), there is no need to fast before having the A1C test. Do you have to fast for an A1C blood test? The A1C blood test is not used to diagnose Type 1 diabetes, gestational diabetes, or cystic fibrosis-related diabetes, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).
